All year round there are high amounts of waste, but especially over the Christmas period.
In the UK, we only recycle roughly a sixth of all Christmas trees bought, when you think of how many Christmas trees are bought each year, and only are sixth of them are recycled, the rest of those trees are causing large amounts of waste. Then the year after, we buy another Christmas tree, there is no need. A way of recycling your Christmas tree is by replanting it, if it still has a root ball on the end then it is perfect to be planted into your garden. Alternatively, you could chop and chip the tree until you have tiny pieces that you can add to your compost pile.
One of the main types of waste at Christmas, is of course … wrapping paper. Every year in the UK we use roughly 227,000 miles of wrapping paper – over nine times the circumference of the earth. A good way of reducing this waste is by reusing paper, card, and gift tags for the next year, or you can save the materials for crafting. You can check if your wrapping paper is recyclable by doing the scrunch test. Foil based paper and anything with glitter on cannot be recycled.
Also, over the Christmas period, we use a massive 300,000 tonnes of cardboard packaging, much of which can be recycled, you just need to simply remove any plastic film or tape. That’s why our packaging is so good for the environment and easier for you, it’s all made from cardboard, no plastic necessary.
So do your part this Christmas and help reduce the amount of waste, any small change can help.
